As New York considers proposed legislation A00114, which seeks to legalize adult possession and use of certain natural plant or fungus-based hallucinogens, including magic mushrooms, it's time to delve into the benefits of allowing home cultivation of these powerful fungi.
Magic mushrooms (and the psilocybin and psilocin they contain) have shown promise in alleviating severe depression, life-altering anxiety, suicidal PTSD, and involuntary opioid addiction. Ongoing research in some of our country’s leading academic institutions suggests that these substances can heal very sick people, facilitate profound introspection, promote emotional healing, and even induce mystical experiences that lead to long-term improvement in one's perspective, well-being, and ability to participate in life and in our society.
Despite their therapeutic potential, magic mushrooms remain illegal in most of the world. Cultivation of this incredibly effective and comparatively safe medicine can result in long-term incarceration and the confiscation of the homes of otherwise innocent and law abiding Americans. This legal status ruins lives, obstructs access to a potentially life-changing treatment, and perpetuates the stigma surrounding psychedelics. It is time to change this law in New York by supporting the proposed legislation A00114 in the New York State Assembly.
A00114 would legalize adult possession, use, and cultivation - not sale - of several natural plant or fungus-based hallucinogens, including magic mushrooms, DMT, mescaline, and ibogaine, for personal use.
