Home Cultivation Association of New York

We aim to promote access to the living cannabis plant through activism, education and great good fun.

About

Who we are: HCANY was founded in 2022 by a group of cannabis people from all backgrounds in the “industry” - we have legacy people, industry people, patients, and more. Our goal is to promote and protect our hard-won right to cultivate cannabis at home.

We finally have our proposed regulations, but there is still much to be done. Cannabis is facing a backlash in many communities as dispensaries start to open across the state, and Homegrow has opponents in and out of the cannabis industry. As homegrow becomes more popular, the anti-cannabis sheriffs across the state will crack down on law-abiding citizens.

We need retailers to start carrying plants! The ROs were permitted to sell plants for a year, but they didn’t. Why? I’m not sure, but I can’t help but suspect a certain letter stridently opposing homegrow from NYMCIA in 2019 still reflects their position, and informs their decision about selling plants.

We still need Community Gardens! Lots of people do not have a space to grow. People who live in public housing or densely populated areas should have the same access to homegrow as people who live in the suburbs. Learning how to grow will help a prospective cannabis industry employee or entrepreneur

We still need better plant limits for caregivers! As long as there is one person in the state who needs a higher plant limit, we will be fighting for that. There is no reason why the OCM can’t have an exception to the plant limit.

We need more access to plants! It’s great that seeds and clones will be available at retail, but the variety and quality would greatly increase if cannabis seedlings or clones could be sold by garden centers or other locations where care of plants is in their wheelhouse.

We need access to labs! People should be get their weed tested.

We need to get ready to fight on the local level! There are many communties in NY that have opted out of dispensaries and consumption lounges, and we expect them to try to prevent people from growing at home. We want to stop that from happening.

And Most of all, we need adult use homegrow regs! We have our med regs, finally, but there are only about 130,000 patients licensed in New York. Unless you are one of them, you can’t grow until the next round of regs comes out.

We’ll also be working on education - zooms on growing, harvesting, guest speakers, product demos, policy and more. We hope that if more people learn about the plant, it will erode the stigma, end social prohibition, and bring access to the medicine to more people who need it.

And of course we hope to have a good time doing it, so we’ll do meetups where we can get together, show off our harvest, try each other’s flower, swap seeds and clones (No sales or bartering!), all kinds of fun stuff. Click the Join Button and we’ll keep you posted on membership.
